Legenda Liverpoolu zmarła w wieku 75 lat po walce z chorobą nowotworową.
Keegan był jedną z najbardziej uwielbianych postaci angielskiego futbolu. W barwach Liverpoolu, które reprezentował w latach 1971–1977, zdobył 100 bramek, sięgając po trzy mistrzostwa Anglii, Puchar Europy, Puchar Anglii oraz dwa Puchary UEFA.
Po odejściu z Anfield kontynuował wielką karierę w niemieckim Hamburgu, gdzie dwukrotnie zdobył Złotą Piłkę, zostając najlepszym piłkarzem Europy.
Jako zawodnik występował również w Scunthorpe United, Southampton i Newcastle United.
Po zakończeniu kariery piłkarskiej został trenerem. Prowadził Newcastle United (w dwóch różnych okresach), Fulham, Manchester City oraz reprezentację Anglii.
